Molecules of free oxygen, known as free radicals, float in our body with unpaired electrons seeking to balance themselves by "stealing" electrons from healthy cells. This process can kill healthy cells and damage tissue. Antioxidants stop this process and maintain the health of our bodies. These antioxidants are abundant in natural foods (grapes, blueberries, pomegranates especially) and man-made antioxidants are also available over the counter. The main antioxidants include vitamins and minerals that neutralize free radicals.
Some of the well-known antioxidants are Vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin B, vitamin A, and the minerals zinc and selenium. All these antioxidants help in the prevention and treatment of acne, preventing the free radicals from harming the skin and immune system, which helps in acne flare-ups.
Acne and Skin Care: Acne suffers should wash their face with warm water, mild soap, and use only their fingertips for washing. Do not use any kind of scrub, harsh wash cloth, or sponge on the skin infected with acne. Rinse with warm water and then pat dry. Most of the cosmetics have chemicals which produce comedones (pimple). If you have acne then you should look for cosmetics which are labeled as being non-comedogenic. Ideally, they should have acne-fighting ingredients in them! Even oily hair products might spread acne to the forehead and T-area (the shape the acne makes down your nose and across your eyebrow ridge).
Basics to conquer unwanted flare-ups: 1. Wash your face gently using plenty of warm to hot water with extra clean fingertips. Use a gentle soap such as Ivory. Be sure the soap contains no oil-based ingredients. Wash at least twice a day. If you finish your regimen with cold water, it will help shrink the pores and close anything that is open. 2. Pat your face with a clean towel or sterile gauze square after it is washed. Rubbing will spread any infections as well as remove any natural moisture that needs to remain on the face. 3. There are antibacterial cleansers and sealers available across the counter or from makeup specialists to use after washing. This activity closes the pores and protects the face, back, arms or chest from the environment. 4. Hydrate your skin, especially in the winter to maintain moisture and neutralize the skin types. 5. If you have oily skin, wipe the oil from the “T” zone daily. 6. Do not carry the oils from your hair onto your face by running your hands through the strands of hair and then touching your face. Germs, skin flakes and bacteria rest in your hair and can be transmitted to your sensitive acne areas.
According to a medical report, teenage boys have a higher degree of problems with acne and can become addicted to squeezing pimples and blackheads. If you must pop your pimples, take a wash cloth and rinse in warm water.

Acne affects most teenagers to some extent, but acne does not discriminate against age, sex or race. When severe, acne can lead to permanent scarring.
